There are, after all, accounts of devastation, like at the flood of the Old Testament and awful death, like at the cross of the New Testament. Add huge battles where thousands were killed, and end-time prophecies with more of the same, and you could, seemingly, make that case. However, for believers, the Bible is a book of light and life. What transforms it from one to the other?

Greg McCollam is an ordained American Baptist minister and the former pastor of Walnut Hills Baptist Church in Cincinnati. A West Virginia native, and a graduate of the University of Charleston (WV), he has been a guest preacher at many churches and has led Bible studies and chapel services at meetings, nursing homes and even a racetrack. He also worked in the marketing departments of both the Indiana Pacers and Cincinnati Reds. He and his wife, Jan, are the parents of three children (Erin, Kelly and Jordan) and the grandparents of two (Reese and Brayden).
